On Creating Space

The next room over fills the air with the most angelic sounds.

Every day Alexa finds her way to the dining room, where crayons and a coloring book are stationed. I smile as she passes me today, after we both awake from a short nap, I putting away dishes and knowing where she is headed.

She nearly dances to her destination as though there is a rhythm to her steps, to her day.

It's quiet, so I think to add a little music and just as I am about to push the power button, I hear the little soprano, angelic voice flowing from the next room. I immediately drop my arm and listen, for this is what I was really hoping to hear.

I listen to her create words and song and art with all of the beauty God has placed within her heart and I learn about her heart as she accompanies my work.

Her song soon moves her to her feet and she dances through the room and out and she is living art.

Is there anything more beautiful than to see something move a child to the place she is free to express and create? Like an open meadow she twirls through, arms lifted to heaven and voice ringing in harmony with the choirs surrounding her. She is bringing glory to her Heavenly Father with the expressions of the very delights He has placed within her heart.

Could this be what it looks like to enter the Kingdom?

Are we like this? Do we allow ourselves to wander through the meadows of His creation, that which He has planted within us? Do we sing with the choirs of angels proclaiming our Heavenly Father with the very delights and expressions of our hearts? Do we create time and space for this in our lives?

Do we allow enough time and space for them to wander, create and discover in their young lives?
And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3

  1. Such a fantastic post. I think many of us shudder at the thought of letting go of our adult maturity and worshiping with child-like abandon. Wonderful post!

  2. Delightful Theresa! I love when my daughter teaches me about joy and wonder as well. I love how you describe your daughter as living breathing art. I want to enter into creativity and beauty like that!

  3. What a delightful post! And what a tribute to your lovely child that you paused to listen and take note of what she's about and what God is about in her. I'll be back to read more. :)

  4. Oh, Theresa, you've captured my FAVORITE part of watching my children grow.. all their creating and impromptu worship. Your dancer and composer would fit well in my home, too :) As I write my middle daughter is "composing" loudly in the shower :) You've asked such an important question, too. DO WE LEAVE THEM TIME TO CREATE? In all the hurry and schedule of life are we actually thwarting the sweetest potential? Kevin Leman has a book "Home Court Advantage" that really convicted me to change how we do life around here- slow down. savor. create. As always, I'm so glad I came :) today

  8. Love this. My daughter was singing praise songs yesterday as she raced her Matchbox cars across the kitchen floor. In her own way she was being creative. And the sound of her voice was sweet to me -- and must be even sweeter to God. Thanks for making me stop and recognize that praise for the beautiful thing that it is.
